Drum Based Team Building (The Power of Percussion)

Drum Based Team Building

What is drum based team building?
Since 1989, our friend Gino COC-AMIR, has been using experiencie-based team initiatives and simulations to engage and challenge staff, to improve team dynamics while having a great deal of fun!! that includes what we call "The power of percussion".

Where are the workshops?
With our portability, Urban Tribal Project will do programs on the beach, in parks, hotels, anywhere...even at your company.

How many people can we attend?
Urban Tribal Project can work with groups from 10-1000 in size. Designed to include everybody, the activities inspire participants to "Let Go" and change how they relate to each other.

...And what can be accomplished?
Our program is costumized to adress: Team building, jump starting new groups, interventions, improving comunication, leadership skills, change management, conflict resolution, building trust and creative problem solving.

"Power of percussion" or "Drum based team building" is a higly inspiring exercise in team learning, using music as the experimental learnig format:
The group is divided into smaller teams that each have their own percussion section. The instructors guide the teams through a learning process and the entire group is brougth back together and is formed into one large samba band!!
Participants experience a terrific exhilarating collective energy. Musical ability not necessary. Great for kicking off company meetings.

POWER OF PERCUSSION (Program Description)

Utilizing World Percussion instruments the group, ranging in size from 25 to 900, will be taught 5-6 different parts of a simple Brazilian Samba arrangement.

The instruments will range from the Surdo (Bass drum), tamborims (high end small frame drum), tom-tom (mid-range drums), agogo bells, shakers, clave sticks and non-traditional BOOMWHACKERS, which give the ensemble a percussive-melodic instrument.

Once the various parts are mastered (around 30 minutes), the group will proceed to learn a number of hand commands with very specific meanings and expectations, up to five commands will be taught including the command for the call and response grand finale.

With this training under their belts, the large group is then divided into smaller mini-ensembles. For example a group of 60 will be divided into 3 groups of 20 which then go to their own break out areas/rooms and CREATE a unique ensemble solo piece that differs from the samba they have learned and takes a risk in creating something different and innovative.

A facilitator is assigned to the group to help them if they get stuck or cannot reach consensus on what direction to take. The facilitators WILL NOT give the team an arrangement but rather help them build on what has already been tried. This solo piece can include voice, melody and dance in addition to percussion. The small groups are given 40 minutes to come up with their variation/innovation, which need not be longer than 1-2 minutes in length.

The full group (60) now gathers again in the main assembly room and plays everything they learned earlier allowing for each smaller team to show off their innovative piece throughout this final performance. Large group ends the event by returning to the grand finale call and response that was learned earlier.

Clients have used POP in the past for several specific learning objectives including:

  1. a) Understanding at a gut-level what SYNERGY feels like
  2. b) Softening the edges of operational silos
  3. c) Demonstrating the relationship between risk and innovation
  4. d) Improving Listening Skills
  5. e) Experiencing how a Large System shares a Common Vision

Of course, it can also be done just for fun!!

Including specific call-response chants that relate to the clients Mission Statement, Meeting themes, slogans, etc can further customize the program.
